Rand is always thinking about what he has to do to save the world, and agonizes about it internally every time he has to do something hard or cruel.

I think the huge difference for me is the mindset. As an aside, for the story, I think she was the right person for the job in a time of war and chaos, but I could easily see her becoming a dysfunctional tyrant in a different time of peace. The worst characters are the ones that are boring, which thankfully are few in the Wheel of Time, at least for me personally. I will admit though that I probably would not like her as a person in real life, but that's okay, because it's okay not to like all the characters in a story. Personally, I find Egwene a very interesting character to read, and I mostly enjoy reading about her, except maybe in the early books. However, in the process, she cuts herself away from and alienates nearly everyone she was close to before. I also believe that her experience as a damane traumatized her and really exacerbated this trait, as she is very reluctant to lose any semblance of control.

One of the other issues I've noticed with her character is that her ambition and need for control supersedes nearly everything else, often coming off as manipulative, bullying, hypocritical, etc. One of the posts here in the past described her like a chameleon, and she kinda fits that up until the last half of the series, although I felt she really came into her own as Amyrlin Seat. First, it was to become a Wisdom, then to become an Aes Sedai, then to become a better Dreamer, then to become as close to a Wise One as she can be, then to again to become an Aes Sedai to then become the best Amyrlin Seat. She jumps straight into something and puts her entire being into that. It comes across as more selfless and as a means to an end for a very difficult task that he resolves to complete.įor Egwene, one of her big character traits is her ambition. Many times, he must make hard choices and sometime he makes mistakes, which hurts him deeply, to the point near the end of the series that he blocks off these emotions to try to stay sane. Deep down, he wants to just be a sheepherder and farmer, but he accepts the duty of dying to save the world, along with breaking it in the process. And this duty is a very heavy burden for him. But I can easily see why people may not like Egwene.įor Rand, he is generally very reluctant, often seizing or using his authority out of duty. Let me preface this by stating that I like both Rand and Egwene, as in I enjoy reading about them.
